Jacquie Paterson is our Counsellor/Cognitive Behavioural Therapist at The Natural Clinic and is a member of the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP). Jacquie holds a COSCA Certificate in Counselling and the SCOTACS Diploma in Counselling and Group-work: a Cognitive Behavioural Approach.
When we feel worried or distressed we often fall into patterns of thinking and responding which can worsen how we feel. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) works to help us notice and change problematic thinking styles or behaviour patterns so we can feel better. CBT has lots of strategies that can help you in the here and now, increasing your ability to cope and to achieve your potential in life.
In your first consultation Jacquie will complete a contract with you to ensure confidentiality. She will assess how you are feeling physically and, emotionally and allow time to get to know you. CBT is present focussed, looking at a recent or current problem and finding a better way to manage it, developing goals for positive change in your life. Sessions last for 50 minutes.
A number of sessions may be required, usually weekly or fortnightly, depending on the difficulty or issue you need help with. Jacquie aims to work collaboratively with you, teaching you how to calm the mind and body, think more clearly and make better decisions. Together you can find the solutions and coping strategies that work for you, so that ultimately you can become your own therapist by applying new skills and techniques to old patterns of thinking and behaving.
